I think it would be great to offer more training to teachers and school staff members about how to recognize a child that is at a high risk for the sort of behaviors that could lead to incidents like Newtown and Millard South a couple of years ago. You can lock all the doors and put all the bulletproof glass you want to in a school, but that may not prevent these horrible acts from occuring (i.e. Millard South). I recognize that teachers have a very difficult job as it is, but training on at risk behaviors and events as well as a system in place to address it may go further installing high tech security measures. I don't think it is bad to have additional locks on doors, but I don't think that will, in itself, solve the problem. Parents know if their child is at risk for this type of behavior. I think it is time that we arm the teachers and other school staff members with the tools to be able to recognize it and authority to address it too.
