How does your school communicate to parents?

I'm struggling to receive information from my child's school, and I'd like to get some ideas to help our school. As a first time middle school parent, many have told me "that's just the way it is -- you can no longer be very involved in school or know what's going on." That's not good enough for me!! Research shows that kids thrive when parents know what's going on and are involved. Please share some success stories of good school-parent communication! I'd like to know how you send/receive information (web site, email, etc.), what information you send/receive (upcoming school events, classroom activities, lunch menus, etc.) and from whom it comes (teachers, principal, counselors, etc.). Are there any district standards for this? Is there someone accountable to make sure information is communicated and/or web sites are updated at your school? Many times, I hear about an event after it happened so I don't even know what to ask ahead of time. Please share your positive experiences and great ideas!
