Safe Seat Debate

I would just like some input...I met with my son's teacher for his first parent/teacher conference of the year. I brought with me a pink sheet she had sent home recently. It said my first grader had been uncooperative that day and so he sat in the "safe seat" for 45 minutes. I was blown away at this amount of time at such a young age. I voiced my concers about it to his teacher. I said it's something I have a hard time wrapping my mind around when pediatricians recommend one minute per age. Which would be 6 minutes. His teacher went on to expain that it's their policy until the child recognizes and acknowledges what they've done wrong. Some time had passed, and I received a phone call home from his teacher. She explained he had been in the safe seat that day and he refused to fill out the pink sheet, so she called me to inform me of it instead of sending the pink sheet home. There were two safe seat times this day. She said about 30 minutes each. The teacher went on to explain that the following day, he would begin his day in the safe seat again for not acknowledging what had happened the day before. I voiced my opinion stating I don't think it's a good way to start a new day. I talked to my son about what happened and told him he needs to apologize to his teacher. He did, but the teacher again put him in the safe seat. I thought apologizing was acknowledging. I went on to call the principle and voice my concerns. I explained everything that had happened and included that I don't have a bad kid. He did fine in Kindergarten, so what is going on now, in first grade? He explained to me it's a newer policy that some of the 25 Millard Elementarty schools have adopted. Instead of sending kids to the principle's office, they do this. In any case, the child is still being isolated from the rest of the class to sit in a desk and stare at a wall. I asked if there were a maximum time for the seat and he said no, that he has 5th graders who may spend their entire day there. WOW
